Childhood

Relatives

Aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents and parents all play important roles in Ferdinand Willius and Clara Holterhoff's childhoods.

The following extended family charts are included to illustrate the relationships.

Clara's mother was a Waldthausen; her father a Holterhoff. The Waldthausen chart begins with Clara's great grandfather, who was the beginning of the "Essen Branch" of the family. I list only those people who were important to her. There are MANY more. You can find them all on line at the Waldthausen genealogy site.
Unfortunately, as you can see, we have hardly any information on the Holterhoffs, Clara's father's family.

We have a great deal on Ferdinand's family, at least as far back as his grandfather. I had to condense their chart due to the number of people represented. However on his mother's side, the Niemanns, there is so little, it wasn't worth charting.

Whenever possible, I began each chart with a grandparent or a great grand parent and included their siblings as well as siblings of parents, Clara and Ferdinand's aunts and uncles, and their descendants, the cousins.

More on relatives can be found under ancestry and siblings.

Correspondence

The following letters written in 1850, 1851 and 1852 are from an aunt an uncle of Ferdinands. they are examples of the kind of letters that are in the Minnesota Historical Society's library.

The following three letters are from the collection of translated correspondence in the library of the Minnesota Historical Society. They date from 1850, 1851 and 1852 just before Ferdinand's emigration to America. They are from an aunt and uncle, whose names can be found on the Willius Ancestral and Extended Family Chart just above. I put them in here to show the importance of family throughout Ferdinand's and Gustav's lives.
