Hamelin Map and Houses

Waldthausen Ancestral Homes in Hamelin

The map and the black and white photographs are from Geschichte der Familie von Waldthausen in Niedersachsen by Dr. Max Bar published in 1929. The colored photographs that follow each picture were taken in 1995 by Mike Dunn, a descendant of Clara and Ferdinand Willius, who is an expert on historic architecture. I gave him a copy of the map and pictures of the houses to look up when he was in Germany. Mike is married to a German woman and lives in London.

House #5 on map

The photographs above are of a house belonging to Hans Walthausen [41], the son of Hans [40], the Stadtvogt. His house #5 Am Markt is on the map. Mike Dunn writes that the house is a symbol of wealth and power. See point #3 of Mike's letter.

House #8 on map

The house in the two pictures above belonged to either Jobst Waldthausen[ 48]  or Jobst Waldthausen [64]. It is described in point #6 of Mike Dunn's letter.

House #10 on map

The house in the picture belonged to Hans Waldthausen [40], the Stadtvogt, city official or mayor. It is #10 on Papen Strasse, a street labeled on the map. Mike makes the point (#8) that the house is not old enough to have belonged to him and must be a more recent one built on the site.
