The Holterhoff Ancestry
Family Chart: The First Holterhoffs
Ancestral Photographs
We have very little information on the relatives of Clara Holterhoff's father. Her aunts, uncles and cousins on the Holterhoff branch of the family tree remain at present, unknown.
Balsamina Hütz and Johann Holterhoff were married in Ramscheid, Germany in 1797. They are the father and mother of Robert Tugenhold Holterhoff and the grandparents of Clara Holterhoff Willius.
Data from the Family Bible
Frieda had an old German Bible that originally belonged to Robert Tugenhold Holterhoff. I am giving it to the Minnesota Historical Society along with the rest of the family papers. The following scrapbook notations are about the old Bible and what is written in it.
These are original pages from the Bible followed by xeroxed copies of the pages with translations.
Frieda's Notes
Parish Records from Julius von Waldthausen
The information on the ancestry of the Holterhoff family came from the same Baron Julius von Waldthausen, who had already provided so much family history. After he got in touch with Martha Claussen about the Waldthausen family, she asked him to find out what he could about the Holterhoffs.
He wrote her on May 16, 1934:
"Very Esteemed Madam cousin,
In addition to my writing of April 16, this year, I do not neglect informing you that I have in the meantime examined the Essen records. Therein at your disposal, a copy enclosed of an extract from the birth and baptismal register of the evangelical parish in Bergish, Newkirchen, dated May 3, 1804, according to which the parents of Robert Tugenhold Holterhoff were the school teacher, Gottlieb Holterhoff and his wife, Balsamine Huetz. In order to make it easier for you, I have written to the parish incumbency in that place and requested them, if possible, to ascertain where and when Gottlieb Holterhoff and his father were born and died, also married, and as soon as I receive an answer will forward the same to you."
Below is an English translation of the document.
