Ernest and Ida Holterhoff

Ida Holterhoff was the second child of Henriette and Robert Holterhoff. She was born in 1833 and was sixteen when the family emigrated from Germany. She had a shipboard romance on a transatlantic sailing ship with a twenty three year old young man named Ernst Meyer. The voyage took eight weeks and as the following diary shows, Ida fell head over heels in love.

Ida's Diary

Ida and Ernst married in 1853 and two years later they had a little boy whom they named Frank. Tragically Ida died two years later in 1857. She was only twenty three years old. The following is a continuation of her diary.

Correspondence

Ida wrote this letter to her young brother soon after her marriage to Ernst Meyer and her move to the farm in St. Peter Minnesota.

This letter, to Ida by her father, dates to around 1855 when Ida's son, Frank, was born.

This is a letter from Ida to her young sister Clara, who was still in Cincinnati with their parents. It is a year after Ida married Ernst.
These are more family letters about Ida, Ernst and their son, Frank.

Ernst's Second Marriage to Emmeline Haslip

Ten years after Ida died Ernst married Emmeline Haslip. They had six children, and through a quirk of fate, described below, Frieda and her sister, Clara, became acquainted with the descendants of one of these children. Frieda likes to call them the "shirt-tail relatives". It was a happy coincidence. Frieda and Clara became good friends with several members of the family and there were enjoyable visits back and forth with much exchange of genealogical information. It is through them that Frieda acquired a copy of Ida's diary.

Frieda's Scrapbook

Frieda and Clara's friendship with this branch of the family is followed here.

This 1971 letter is the first contact Frieda had with the descendants of Ernst Meyer's second marriage. It is from Wesley James Meyer in St. Peter, Minnesota.
The Meyer family farms in St. Peter MN.
The following are notes and letters containing information exchanged with the Meyer family, primarily Wes Meyer in St. Peter and Lillie Jensen who lived in Yakima Washington.
The family addresses as of the 70's and 80's. Then the correspondence seems to have tapered off or stopped.
