The Essener Branch

Sources of Information

The tree below is condensed from Julius von Waldthausen's The Stammtafeln der Familie von Waldthausen Seit ihrer Übersiedelung nach Essen (genealogical charts). Julius [211], a second cousin of Clara's, is outlined in red.

Family Chart: The Essener Branch

Clara Willius Holterhoff is descended from the Essener branch of the Waldthausen family. Her ancestor, Justus Waldthausen [73], was born in Hamelin, where many generations of Waldthausens lived, but moved to Essen as a young man. His son, Johan Wilhelm Waldthausen [93], Clara Holterhoff's great-great-grandfather, was born in Essen and is the founder of the Essener Branch of the family. In Essen the family prospered, became quite wealthy and owned large acreages of land.
The chart shows Clara's relatives on her mother's (Waldthausen's) side of the family. It follows several generations of Clara's ancestors and includes cousins, aunts, and uncles, many of whom were her grandfather's or great-grandfather's relatives. As with the chart in The First Waldthausens, it lists only those family members we are interested in. I plan on donating the original and complete Julius von Waldthausen charts to the Minnesota Historical Society where you will be able to see them. They're also available at http://www.wellhausen.com/index.html.

NOTE:
              Boxes outlined in red:

1. Friedrich Albert von Waldthausen [127] is the author of the family history published in 1884 titled: Beitrage zur Geschichte der Familie Waldthausen.
2. Julius Wilhelm von Waldthausen [211] is the author of the family charts published in 1932 titled: The Stammtafeln der Familie von Waldthausen Seit ihrer Übersiedlung nach Essen. He is also the correspondent who gave Martha Claussen the Waldthausen genealogical Bar books.
              Boxes outlined in yellow:
Inheritors of the "Swannenkampf" or "Swan's Preserve". It's interesting to note that Julia Henrietta Hagemann, Gerhard's wife, was raised on the Swan Preserve Estate. Her father's family, the von Hovens, owned the estate before the Waldthausens.

Ancestral Photographs

Picture
Johann Wilhelm Waldthausen [93], the founder of the Essener branch of the Waldthausen family and his wife, Gertrud Maria Strucker. They are the great great grandparents of Clara Holterhoff Willius. The birth dates on the photograph are fron the Albert von Waldthausen book and don't match the dates from the Bar books that I have used on my charts.

Introduction to Julius von Waldthausen's Genealogy

I felt the introduction to The Stammtafeln der Familie von Waldthausen Seit ihrer Übersiedelung nach Essen was interesting enough to include here.

History of the Essener Branch

I condensed the history of the Essener branch of the Waldthausen family from Volume I and Volume II of  Geschichte der Familie von Waldthausen in Niedersachsen by Dr. Max Bar, Hildesheim und Leipzig 1929 and from information in Beitrage zur Geschichte der  Familie Waldthausen by Friedrich Albert von Waldthausen. It is a continuation of "The History of the First Waldthausens".
